The 53rd Statistical Report on the Development of China’s Internet
As of December 2023:
- China’s internet user base reached 1.092 billion people, an increase of 24.8 million compared to December 2022. The internet penetration rate is 77.5%, up by 1.9 percentage points.
- The mobile internet user base reached 1.091 billion people, with 25.62 million new users compared to December 2022. The proportion of users accessing the internet via mobile phones is 99.9%.
- Rural internet users accounted for 326 million people, representing 29.8% of the total internet user base. Urban internet users reached 766 million people, accounting for 70.2% of the total.
- The proportion of users accessing the internet via mobile phones is 99.9%. Usage rates for desktop computers, laptops, televisions, and tablets are 33.9%, 30.3%, 22.5%, and 26.6%, respectively.
- The total number of domain names in China was 31.6 million, including 20.13 million “.CN” domain names.
- The video streaming user base reached 1.067 billion people, with 36.13 million new users compared to December 2022. Short video users accounted for 1.053 billion people, a 41.45 million increase, representing 96.4% of the total internet user base.
- Instant messaging users reached 1.06 billion people, with 21.55 million new users compared to December 2022, accounting for 97.0% of the total.
- Online government service users reached 973 million people, with 47.01 million new users compared to December 2022, representing 89.1% of the total.
- Online payment users reached 954 million people, with 42.43 million new users compared to December 2022, accounting for 87.3% of the total.
- Online shopping users reached 915 million people, with 69.67 million new users compared to December 2022, representing 83.8% of the total.
- Search engine users reached 827 million people, with 25.04 million new users compared to December 2022, accounting for 75.7% of the total.
- Live streaming users reached 816 million people, with 65.01 million new users compared to December 2022, representing 74.7% of the total.
- Online music users reached 715 million people, with 30.44 million new users compared to December 2022, accounting for 65.4% of the total.
- Online food delivery users reached 545 million people, with 23.38 million new users compared to December 2022, representing 49.9% of the total.
- Ride-hailing users reached 528 million people, with 90.57 million new users compared to December 2022, accounting for 48.3% of the total.
- Online literature users reached 520 million people, with 27.83 million new users compared to December 2022, representing 47.6% of the total.
- Online travel booking users reached 509 million people, with 86.29 million new users compared to December 2022, accounting for 46.6% of the total.
- Internet healthcare users reached 414 million people, with 51.39 million new users compared to December 2022, representing 37.9% of the total.
